Concerts
David Bowie famously performed his song Heroes at a concert next to the Berlin Wall in 1987. He wrote the song whilst living in Berlin between 1976-1978 and it became an anthem for the divided city. Thousands heard Bowie perform, on both sides of the Wall.
In 1988, a year before the Wall fell, Bruce Springsteen played for four hours in front of an estimated 300,000 people in East Germany. He told the crowd: "I'm not here for any government. I've come to play rock'n'roll for you in the hope that one day all the barriers will be torn down." The event was intended to release some of the tension felt by people in the GDR, but instead it made them more eager for change.
