Never Such Innocence is a collection of poems about the First World War, compiled by Dr Martin Stephen, and is a journey through the war. The script was premiered at Australia House in May 2014 and was edited in performance. Divided into sections to enable its use in history, drama or English lessons, or in school assemblies, it begins with the idealism and enthusiasm with which the war was greeted, and follows the story through, including the role played by officers and generals, life in the trenches, the heartbreak caused by the casualties and the end of the war itself. Most suitable for Year 9 and upwards, this is a valuable addition to the curriculum of any department leading the study of the Great War. Approximately 50 minutes in length, the play is extremely versatile in that it could accommodate a large cast sharing the poetry reading, or a small number taking larger responsibility for the recitals.

You can download the play for free here.
